Interview: Michel SOARES, Founder of Les Casquettes Jaunes Association (Odyssea)

A way to extend life and make yourself useful

For 8 years now, Smartclic supports Les Casquettes Jaunes, an association created by Michel Soares to help cancer research. He tells us how this association helped him to overcome the death of his wife. Also, he calls for everyone’s generosity for his 8th participation to the Odyssea race next October.

At first, it was a way to pay tribute to her. To concretise a project that Alexia, his wife, had, while she was fighting against a second breast cancer. 8 years later, it became a real commitment. A desire to contribute in an active way to finance the research. “Because, even if we still talk so little about it, cancer affects everyone.”

A beautiful movement of solidarity

Les Casquettes Jaunes association was born in 2014: “it was one of my wife’s friend who suggested that we run the Odyssea race together, for which Alexia was preparing. With the children, this allowed us to find a goal and some energy. “Michel decided to create a fundraising and succeeded by gathering a hundred relatives around that race. More than 20 000€ were collected, making the association the first race’s fundraiser that year. Groups ran for Alexia in Paris, Cannes and Bayonne. “It was a tremendous momentum of generosity, but I thought it was a shame that those people couldn’t recognise themselves because of all the runners wearing pink T-shirts”. That’s where the idea of the yellow caps came from. A distinctive sign that is extremely unifying for all participants and that Smartclic is very proud to provide each year for the association.

Supporting cancer research

In addition to the race, Michel Soares pays close attention to the follow up of  the funds collected: at the beginning of each year, a visit is organised at the cancer research center in the Gustave Roussy hospital located in Paris, where Dr. Clara Nahmias’ teams are specifically working on breast cancer. “In France, we don’t have a culture of giving and research is cruelly lacking in funding. It’s important for me to talk to the center’s teams to show that our donations give true results. “

To support Les Casquettes Jaunes association, there is no obligation to participate in the race: donations can be made until December 31, 2021 and are 66% tax deductible.
